Fed Raises Rates for the First Time in Three Years as Bitcoin Battles $76K: What Happens to Crypto Next?

On Thursday, September 17, 2026, the crypto market is digesting a major shift in U.S. monetary policy. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points on September 16, moving the federal funds target range from 3.50% to 3.75% up to 3.75% to 4.00%.

This was the first Fed rate increase in more than three years and the first increase since 2023. The vote was unanimous at 12 to 0. Bitcoin did not collapse after the decision, but BTC is still battling the wider $75,000 to $77,000 zone and remains below the $80,000 psychological recovery level.

Approximate September 17, 2026 Asian-session snapshot: Bitcoin near $76,500, Ethereum near $2,435, Dollar Index near 100.33, U.S. 2-year Treasury yield near 4.71%, U.S. 10-year Treasury yield near 4.99%, Brent crude near $105, WTI near $101, and gold near $4,305. These figures move continuously.

The Federal Reserve raises rates for the first time in more than three years

The Fed’s September decision was widely expected, but the message around the decision was more hawkish than many investors wanted. The Committee said inflation remains elevated and that the policy action would support a timelier return toward the Fed’s 2% objective.

The Fed also described economic activity as expanding at a solid pace. Domestic spending was described as resilient, productivity growth as strong, and capital investment as robust. The unemployment rate has changed little.

That combination matters. The Fed sees inflation as too high while the economy still looks strong enough to absorb tighter policy. That is why crypto traders are now focused less on the completed September hike and more on whether another hike is coming.

Policy item September 16 result
Rate change+25 basis points
Old target range3.50% to 3.75%
New target range3.75% to 4.00%
Vote12-0 unanimous
Historical contextFirst hike since 2023 and first increase in more than three years

Why the unanimous 12-0 vote matters

A unanimous vote matters because it shows broad agreement inside the voting Committee. The market already expected a hike, but a 12-0 decision made the message look more firm.

For Bitcoin, the key issue is not only that rates went up by 25 basis points. The bigger issue is that the Fed appears comfortable keeping pressure on inflation while growth and employment remain resilient.

A strong economy can help risk appetite, but it can also give the Fed more room to tighten. That is why the same data can create mixed reactions in crypto markets.

What the new 3.75% to 4.00% rate range means

The federal funds rate is the Fed’s main short-term policy rate. A higher target range can lift short-term Treasury yields, money-market yields and the return available from low-risk cash-like instruments.

This matters for crypto because Bitcoin does not pay yield. When short-term rates rise, investors can earn more from traditional instruments while crypto remains volatile.

Simple 25-basis-point explainer

One basis point equals 0.01 percentage point. Twenty-five basis points equals 0.25 percentage point. That is why the Fed’s target range moved from 3.50% to 3.75% up to 3.75% to 4.00%.

The dot plot says the Fed may not be finished

The dot plot is a set of individual projections from Fed policymakers. It is not a promise, and it is not a guaranteed future path. But markets watch it closely because it shows where policymakers think rates may need to go.

Sixteen of eighteen policymakers project at least one more quarter-point hike before the end of 2026. The median projected federal funds rate is 4.1% at the end of 2026 and remains 4.1% at the end of 2027.

Projection item September 2026 dot-plot message
Participants seeing no further 2026 hike2 of 18
Participants seeing at least one more 2026 hike16 of 18
Median policy rate for end-20264.1%
Median policy rate for end-20274.1%
Median policy rate for end-20283.9%
Longer-run median3.2%

The lesson is clear: the September hike is complete, but the market is now pricing the risk of more tightening. Future inflation, employment, oil prices and financial conditions can still change that path.

What the Fed now expects for growth, jobs and inflation

The new projections combine stronger growth and employment with a somewhat worse near-term inflation outlook. That mix gives policymakers more confidence that the economy can handle tighter policy.

Fed projection 2026 median 2027 median Market meaning
Real GDP growth2.3%2.4%Growth remains solid.
Unemployment rate4.1%4.1%Labor-market weakness is not the central concern.
PCE inflation3.7%2.3%Inflation remains above the 2% goal.
Core PCE inflation3.4%2.5%Underlying inflation remains sticky.

The Fed raised its 2026 GDP forecast from 2.2% to 2.3%, lowered its unemployment projection from 4.3% to 4.1%, and raised its 2026 median policy-rate projection from 3.8% to 4.1%.

Why inflation remains the central problem

Kevin Warsh said inflation remains elevated and that the rate increase was intended to support a timelier return toward the Fed’s 2% goal. This should be understood as the Fed’s policy explanation, not a prediction of every future decision.

Inflation is still the key reason crypto markets are sensitive to rates. If inflation remains sticky, markets may price additional hikes. If inflation cools faster than expected, rate pressure may ease.

For Bitcoin, this means the next important data points are not only crypto-specific. Upcoming CPI, PCE, employment data, oil prices and Treasury yields can all affect market direction.

Bitcoin holds near $76K after the decision

Bitcoin is holding in the mid-$76,000 region after the Fed delivered a widely expected hike but signaled further tightening. BTC remains above the critical $75,000 region, but it is still below $80,000.

Bitcoin did not immediately collapse because the 25-basis-point move was heavily priced before the meeting. BTC had already declined from the $80,000 to $82,000 region before the announcement.

Holding near $76K does not mean the market has fully absorbed the Fed decision. It only means the first reaction has not produced a decisive break below support.

Why Bitcoin did not crash immediately

  • The rate hike was mostly priced in before the meeting.
  • Bitcoin had already corrected from the $80K to $82K region.
  • Some leveraged positioning had already been reduced.
  • Long-term crypto demand has not disappeared.
  • Oil eased from recent highs, although it remains elevated.
  • Long-term Treasury yields did not surge dramatically after the decision.

Why $75K remains Bitcoin’s most important immediate support

The $75,000 to $76,000 area is Bitcoin’s immediate battleground. It is a major psychological and technical support zone, not a guaranteed floor.

Buyers defending this region would show that BTC can absorb a hawkish Fed, stronger dollar pressure, heavy ETF outflows and high yields. A decisive break would shift attention toward $72,000 to $73,000.

Healthy $75K defense signs

  • Bitcoin holds above $75K for several sessions.
  • Spot selling volume declines.
  • ETF outflows begin to moderate.
  • The 2-year Treasury yield stabilizes.
  • The Dollar Index stops rising.
  • Ethereum and major altcoins stabilize.
  • Bitcoin recovers $77K and $78K.

Warning signs

  • Daily closes materially below $75K.
  • Another sequence of large ETF outflows.
  • The Dollar Index extends above its current high.
  • 2-year and 10-year yields rise further.
  • Markets price multiple rapid Fed hikes.
  • Oil returns toward recent highs.
  • Long liquidations accelerate.

$78K to $79KLarger recovery and supply zoneReclaiming this area would show buyers are absorbing Fed and ETF pressure.
$80KMajor psychological recovery levelA sustained move above this level would materially improve sentiment.

The dollar jumps to a seven-week high

The Dollar Index is near 100.33, its highest level in about seven weeks. A stronger dollar can tighten global liquidity because many assets, trades and debts are priced in dollars.

Bitcoin can sometimes rise during a strong-dollar period, especially when crypto-specific demand is strong. But dollar strength usually makes the environment harder for risk-sensitive assets.

Why the two-year Treasury yield matters to crypto

The U.S. 2-year Treasury yield is near 4.71%. This yield is highly sensitive to expectations for future Fed policy.

When markets expect more hikes, the 2-year yield often rises. That can pressure Bitcoin because investors compare volatile crypto exposure with higher short-duration yields.

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield remains close to 5%. Near-5% longer-term yields create another layer of competition for capital.

How the Fed hike reaches Bitcoin

Post-Fed transmission chain

  1. The Fed raises short-term policy rates.
  2. Cash and short-duration fixed-income assets offer higher yields.
  3. Markets price additional hikes.
  4. The 2-year Treasury yield rises.
  5. The dollar strengthens.
  6. Required returns increase across markets.
  7. Crypto faces stronger competition for capital.
  8. Bitcoin must rely more on spot demand, ETF demand and longer-term conviction.

Bitcoin does not move mechanically opposite to interest rates every day. ETF flows, spot buying, leverage, regulation, global liquidity and investor conviction can all create temporary divergence.

Oil eases but remains above $100

Brent crude is near $105 after recent Middle East supply fears eased somewhat. WTI remains near $101. That is lower than the recent spike, but still high enough to matter for inflation.

Oil affects fuel, transportation and production costs. If energy prices stay elevated, future inflation pressure can remain a problem for the Fed.

Lower oil is helpful, but one decline does not remove inflation risk. Crypto traders should continue watching Brent, WTI, fuel prices and verified supply developments.

Bitcoin ETF demand weakens sharply

Bitcoin ETF flows have become a bigger concern after the Fed decision. The latest Farside table shows Bitcoin ETFs are now about $135 million net negative for September through September 16.

September 15 was revised to about $450.4 million of outflows. September 16 added another $151.8 million of outflows. The latest two sessions therefore lost more than $600 million combined.

Date Bitcoin ETF net flow Market message
September 14+$159.9 millionA brief positive session before the Fed.
September 15-$450.4 millionLarge outflow before the decision.
September 16-$151.8 millionAnother negative session after the rate decision.
September 1 to 16About -$135.0 millionBitcoin ETFs are now slightly negative for September.

This does not mean institutional Bitcoin demand has permanently disappeared. It does mean recent regulated demand is much weaker than during the strong early-September inflow period.

Ethereum ETFs remain positive for the month

Ethereum ETFs also had outflows in the latest two sessions, but the September total remains stronger than Bitcoin’s. ETH ETFs are about $209.1 million net positive for September through September 16.

Ethereum ETF flow card

  • September 14: about +$121.1 million.
  • September 15: about -$142.3 million.
  • September 16: about -$94.3 million.
  • September 1 through 16: about +$209.1 million.
  • Ethereum’s September ETF total remains stronger than Bitcoin’s.
  • This does not confirm altcoin season by itself.

Combined BTC and ETH ETF flows remain only slightly positive at about $74.1 million for September through September 16. The ETF picture is much weaker than it appeared earlier in the month.

Why ETF demand matters more when rates are rising

When rates rise, Bitcoin needs stronger demand to compete with higher traditional yields. ETF inflows can help because they show regulated investment-product demand.

ETF outflows do the opposite. They do not decide the entire market, but they remove one important support at a time when the dollar and Treasury yields are already working against crypto.

This is why traders should compare ETF flows with spot price, spot volume, Treasury yields, the Dollar Index and broader liquidity conditions.

Wall Street turns lower after hawkish Fed guidance

U.S. stocks initially traded better before turning lower as investors digested the Fed’s hawkish guidance. This was not a crash, but it showed that the future rate path mattered more than the expected quarter-point move.

Index September 16 close Daily change
Dow Jones Industrial Average51,461.78-1.21%
S&P 5007,552.14-0.44%
Nasdaq Composite25,978.43-0.01%

The Dow experienced the largest decline. The Nasdaq was nearly flat because semiconductor strength offset some pressure. That mixed reaction is similar to crypto: headline rates matter, but sector strength, liquidity and positioning also matter.

Could another Fed hike arrive before year-end?

Another hike is not guaranteed. The Fed’s projections strongly favor at least one more 2026 increase, but future policy remains dependent on incoming data.

Current market pricing shows roughly a 90% probability of another hike by year-end, while the October meeting is closer to a coin flip in the latest Reuters-style snapshot. Market pricing is not a Fed commitment.

Next Fed meetings to watch

  • October 27 to 28, 2026.
  • December 8 to 9, 2026.
  • Key inputs: CPI, PCE, employment data, oil prices, consumer spending, Treasury yields and financial conditions.

Why the Bank of Japan is the next global liquidity event

The Bank of Japan decision is due Friday. Markets expect Japanese rates to rise, and that can matter for global liquidity.

Higher Japanese rates can strengthen the yen. A stronger yen can pressure yen-funded carry trades. Carry-trade unwinding can reduce leveraged exposure across global risk assets, including crypto.

This does not mean a BOJ hike automatically causes a crypto selloff. It means Bitcoin faces another global-liquidity catalyst immediately after the Fed.

Ten possible paths for crypto after the Fed

$75K holds and ETF outflows slow

Bitcoin stabilizes while regulated selling pressure decreases, allowing BTC to rebuild toward $78K and $80K.

$75K holds despite another hike being priced

Crypto-specific spot demand absorbs tighter conditions, making Bitcoin resilience more meaningful.

$75K breaks decisively

Spot selling and ETF outflows accelerate below support, putting $72K to $73K in focus.

Bitcoin reclaims $80K

The dollar and yields cool while demand improves, allowing BTC to challenge $82K to $83K.

Fed hike expectations accelerate

Markets price October and December tightening more aggressively, keeping Bitcoin below resistance.

Inflation cools faster than expected

Additional hike expectations fade and liquidity conditions become less difficult.

Oil falls below $100

Future inflation concerns decline, helping bonds and crypto sentiment.

Oil returns toward recent highs

Rate expectations and Treasury yields rise again, creating renewed BTC pressure.

Ethereum ETF demand remains stronger

Selective rotation can continue, but that still does not confirm a full altcoin season.

BOJ tightening triggers deleveraging

The yen strengthens sharply and global carry trades unwind, creating another liquidity-driven volatility event.

Bitcoin post-Fed scorecard

Signal Current status
Bitcoin above $75KPositive.
Bitcoin above $78KNot confirmed.
Bitcoin above $80KNot confirmed.
Fed tightening completed for 2026Not confirmed.
Dot plotHawkish, with one more 2026 hike as the median path.
DollarNegative for crypto, near a seven-week high.
2-year Treasury yieldNegative, moved higher.
10-year Treasury yieldElevated near 5%.
OilImproving from the recent peak but still above $100.
Bitcoin ETF September flowsNegative at about -$135M through September 16.
Ethereum ETF September flowsPositive at about +$209.1M.

Bitcoin’s ability to remain above $75K despite a hawkish Fed is constructive. A sustained recovery still requires improvement in ETF flows, yields, the dollar or broader liquidity conditions.

What crypto traders should watch after the Fed

  1. Watch Bitcoin around $75,000 to $76,000.
  2. Watch whether BTC reclaims $77,000.
  3. Monitor $78,000 to $79,000 as the next recovery region.
  4. Watch $80,000 as the major psychological barrier.
  5. Monitor $82,000 to $83,000 if momentum strengthens.
  6. Watch $72,000 to $73,000 if $75K fails.
  7. Follow Bitcoin ETF flows every U.S. trading session.
  8. Follow Ethereum ETF flows.
  9. Monitor Bitcoin spot volume, open interest, funding rates and liquidation data.
  10. Watch the U.S. 2-year Treasury yield.
  11. Watch the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield near 5%.
  12. Watch the Dollar Index around 100.
  13. Monitor Brent and WTI crude.
  14. Watch market pricing for October and December Fed hikes.
  15. Follow upcoming CPI, PCE and employment data.
  16. Watch Friday’s Bank of Japan decision.
  17. Watch yen carry-trade conditions.
  18. Follow developments around U.S. crypto market-structure legislation.
  19. Avoid reacting only to one headline.
  20. Avoid excessive leverage.
  21. Use only funds you can afford to place at risk.

False signals traders should avoid

  • The Fed hiking once does not guarantee a long series of hikes.
  • The dot plot is not a binding promise.
  • A 90% market probability of another hike is not a Fed commitment.
  • Bitcoin holding $75K for one day does not guarantee the support survives.
  • Bitcoin ETF outflows do not mean institutional demand has permanently disappeared.
  • Ethereum ETF strength does not automatically mean altcoin season.
  • The dollar reaching a seven-week high does not guarantee it continues rising.
  • Oil falling from recent highs does not mean supply risk has ended.
  • A strong economy can support risk appetite while also giving the Fed room to tighten.
  • Technical support and resistance are zones rather than guaranteed turning points.

Why interest-rate education matters for crypto users

The first Fed hike in more than three years is a useful educational moment for crypto beginners. It shows that Bitcoin is not moved only by crypto headlines.

Interest rates affect Treasury yields, the dollar, liquidity, ETF demand and investor behavior. When rates rise, investors become more selective because traditional assets can offer higher returns.

Crypto users should understand what 25 basis points means, why the dot plot matters, why the 2-year yield reacts quickly, why high bond yields compete with Bitcoin and why ETF flows can change fast.

How Sea Coin Network can explain Fed policy without hype

Sea Coin Network’s role is not to predict Bitcoin’s next exact price. Its stronger role is to make complex market events easier for ordinary users to understand.

Sea Coin Network can teach what the Federal Reserve is, what the federal funds rate means, what 25 basis points means, why this was the first hike in more than three years and how a Fed decision differs from the dot plot.

It can also explain Bitcoin, Ethereum, inflation, interest rates, Treasury yields, ETFs, the dollar, oil, liquidity and market cycles in simple language through crypto and macro market news, daily quizzes and Help Centre learning cards.

Users can participate in Sea Coin from a mobile phone without expensive mining hardware or advanced trading knowledge. The built-in wallet and balance-management experience can help beginners understand digital-asset balances step by step.

Eligible reward-based activities, Watch and Earn where relevant, Catch and Earn, Captain’s Voyage, recurring participation and games including Tide of Wars can support regular learning and engagement. Eligible rewards are participation incentives, not guaranteed income.

Why Sea Coin Network keeps building through every market cycle

Sea Coin Network is an earlier-stage, mobile-first crypto ecosystem focused on accessible participation, education, eligible rewards, community engagement, wallet familiarity, security and continued product development.

Email login, the Help Centre, community participation, user feedback, security improvements, bug fixes, product updates and transparent communication all matter. These features help users stay connected without turning every market event into a price promise.

Sea Coin Network should not claim it benefits automatically from higher or lower interest rates. It should not claim Sea Coin price will rise if Bitcoin recovers. It should not make exchange-listing, selling-date, profit, income or investment-return promises.

Sea Coin Network’s long-term opportunity is not to predict whether Bitcoin moves to $72K or $80K after one Federal Reserve meeting. It is to help ordinary users understand how inflation, interest rates, ETF demand, currencies and global liquidity influence crypto while building practical mobile utility.
